actually, the first 'problem' can be used to create a situation of conflict. the two characters at the beginning get along well and starts developing feelings but suddenly they are forced to be apart, busy with their own problems and situations to be together. Even juicier if its only one of the characters who is unable to meet up. in the end the other character just explodes, asking "what happened why did you get so distant?!" creating conflict which they could overcome by communicating! even problems can be bent and used properly and turned into a good plot addition!

Here's my rule of thumb. If you have to ask "do I need a prologue?" the answer is no. Also, if your prologue is just expositing your worldbuilding or your characters or something, I'm sorry, but I'm skipping it for being a trash-tier prologue. I'll read your chapter one just in case you're just bad at writing prologues (even successful authors can really suck at them) and judge your book that way. When critiquing, I will flat-out tell people who write a prologue to setup information to cut the prologue entirely. That's not what a prologue is for. It's a framing device and appetizer to the main story. It should raise questions, not answer them. This is a massive reason why I cannot get into Brandon Sanderson's writing.

    1. idiotic characters, especially the heroines who are 25+ but act like 13 yo kids 2. betraying body syndome, the hero is a jerk and bullies or cheats on the heroine and she just jumps to bed with him like nothing happened 3. no build-up, no chemistry, no layers, no brains, no reason why i should continue 4. too much BS drama created only to keep them apart that could be solved within a short conversation, i hate that 5. weak heroine who cries a lot and is the queen of martyrs and kinda likes being this way 6. start with a ONS or they just kiss within the first 5 chapters or so 7. instalove 8. bad writing 9. too many characters introduced all at once right at the beginning, see point 8 10. giggling characters. nope. moving on. there are of course more depending on the book, but these are pretty essential to me, the self-proclaimed queen of DNFs.

i actually don’t like romance and shipping, but while my story has almost no romance or connected characters i know that some weirdos will do it and i doesn’t want it 😩 (especially for two characters, gartha and billy… i don’t want to see them in a ship i beg, they’re in the same family and i’m scared of the weirdos which could make this, is there anything i can do to prevent ships in my story?)

i used the strong female character trope a lot but i twisted it a lot. i even made it some part of my world building and put internal conflict in it because some of them struggle a lot to « look strong » because they’re in a dictatorial patriarchy which have to be changed trough the story. simply because in their dangerous world women are taken for « needs to be strong to fulfill the males desires » by most people in it. the mc also doesn’t understand why women hide their flaws so hard to look strong and when he understands it he is gets even more enraged against their horrible government. which adds a lot of tension for a story where the mc fights for peace, truth and equality. further we understand that everyone has flaws and strengths and nobody is truly stronger than anyone. that’s just about context, a male or a female can all be strong and i believe it’s true, but real strength comes by accepting our own flaws. and every character will have to do it. meanwhile i did faked some death in the first half of my book, but it almost always came with some consequences or struggle. i also added a lot of species like werewolves, vampires, demons, dragons and zombies and i also created some like the Rogbocks. but for every existing species, i made them have some actually character traits based on it and also around their origins and civilizations. like how and why vampires looses any sense of worth besides wearing noble clothes because they just like it, they also loose any empathy for people they don’t actually like. making them bad at communication and easy for them to kill thousands of people without caring. and the opposite for werewolves which have a huge sense of worth and a lot of empathy, making it harsh for them when they figure out they actually killed someone (and acceptance is the only way they can control themselves, that’s why they have a hidden civilization hunting the ones who are too dangerous and/or can’t learn to accept who they are) zombies who have some sort of hive mind, making them actually menacing because they can cooperate veeery easily with each other. added to their ability to modify themselves and to fuse to make a bridge over fire which is their weak point, or to make a wall flesh to trap someone and infect it. they also don’t eat people but they try to infect as much as possible. they infect instantly on touch of some wound, and it’s very difficult to cure when someone is infected, also when they transform its irreversible. and many other things which i won’t spoil 😅 (sorry, my English is awful. i’m french 😅)

Beginning with a boring day is fine (just look at the hunger games) as long as it's not boring. What I mean is: it might be boring for the character, but it shouldn't be boring for us. It's not what you're writing so much as it is HOW you're writing it.

Folks i need some feedback on something! I know exposition in the first chapter is generally a no-no, but in my WIP, it starts with a theatre show that my protagonist is performing in that explains a bit of the city's history and hints at a big prophesy that is integral to the plot (i subverted this trope, don't worry) Is this still a good idea? I will of course be incorporating my protagonist and her conflicts even while she's putting on this show, but i wanted to ask if this was a good idea and if it should JUST be the prophesy, and the history and world-building is revealed afterwards as part of the plot?

One thing in my opinion that kills a ship is they fight waaay to much. Sure, disagreements is important when writing ships. BUT it only works if the characters WORK through the conflict. Arguments in fictional ships build chemistry BUT only to a certain point. When you have two characters arguing and having an on and off relationship it becomes toxic and not fun to watch or read about.

Here are some romance cliches that kind of annoy me: Cliche 1: When person A is presumed to be dead by person B, so person B goes on a personal journey to cope with their death, only to discover that the person A was alive the whole time and they get back together. Cliche 2: Person A and person B start out hating each other but eventually fall in love with each other, but they have a falling out so A leaves for somewhere else only to realize that they still love B, so they return to win back B only to discover that he/she also left, so A rushes to stop B. B resists at first but is eventually won over after A persists in proclaiming their love for them, and the two kiss and return home. Cliche 3: Person A doesn't like their Person B's fiance and thus tries to break them up so they can get with Person B. #2 doesn't bother me as much as I think it can make for a good story if executed well, but #1 and 3 get on my nerves.

love bombing and sex bombing are a thing. as is promiscuity. as is trauma bonding and search for validation in others, sexual coercion and physical violence, altered states, compulsions and paraphilias, addictions, personality disorders, mania, poverty, and i'm sure myriad unmentioned factors that lead people to form unhealthy, and i s'pose healthy ones too, attachments in all kinds of ways on various timescales, but love at first sight is pretty obviously the love of an image, limerance. it prevents the development of a healthy relationship with the real person. it's kinda different than whether 2, or more, people knock boots, freely and equally or otherwise, and/or develop a connection quickly

enemies to lovers, sure sometimes, more like, one pair begin as rivals and remain rivals but become very intimate for a time. one couple become lovers soon after meeting, but the flaws inherent in their relationship manifest in time setting them at odds. another two are faced with a threat to their relationship, which never yet was, by a third party from one of their pasts. really, one party was the same in each of these examples and they're not chronological, but that's besides the point

I would say both Sarah Connor and Ellen Ripley are a perfect example of a good strong female character. They were not overpowered and they had to be crafty instead of relying upon strength when faced with danger. True Sarah bulked up in the second terminator film but she still had to be crafty when having to fight men, in the movie.
